The Forest Between Us

There was one day
When we were very small
When we decided to plant
A sapling between us
At the time I saw it
As a metaphor of sorts
For our friendship and love
As evergreen and lasting
As the branches sprung before us.
But lately I can hardly
Remember the love
That inspired the seed
That grew into a wood.
Now day by day
And year by year
It’s grown harder and harder
To see you through it.
How will I climb
Or find a way around
Or navigate through
The forest between us?
